Minnesota Metadata Editor (MME)
The Minnesota Metadata Editor (MME) enables data publishers to create, view, and edit metadata (documentation) that is compatible with the Minnesota Geographic Metadata Guidelines (MGMG). MGMG is a streamlined version of the national Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) geospatial metadata standard (Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata, or CSDGM). Using this tool enables data publishers to create metadata in the format compatible with the requirements of the Minnesota Geospatial Commons.
MME runs as a portable application and needs no installation. It does not interact with Windows or ArcGIS. Running the application from a network drive is not recommended. The editor can be copied from the GDRS network (gdrs\apps\pub\us_mn_state_mngeo\minnesota_metadata_editor), can be searched for and downloaded on the Commons, or can be downloaded from the MME webpage.
The editor contains some built-in help and a tutorial is available via MnGeo’s Minnesota Metadata Editor web pages. Not all fields in the MGMG are required to publish a successful metadata record to the Commons. Recommendations for mandatory, desirable and optional fields were approved by the Statewide Geospatial Advisory Council on June 24, 2015. Other best practices for Geospatial Commons metadata are being developed.
It is possible to create FGDC-CSDGM metadata by other means (such as in ArcCatalog) and export it for use in the Commons. The details of the ArcCatalog process are outlined in MnGeo's web page Producing ArcCatalog 10 Metadata for the Minnesota Geospatial Commons.
