dsPurpose | The data is intended to be used as a tool for understanding the statewide extent of peatlands in Minnesota. The data is not intended for use in detecting change over time (e.g., peatland losses or gains), nor is it intended for use as a stand-alone product at a fine scale. For example, at a site or project level, consulting additional datasets, acquiring new high-resolution imagery or LIDAR, or field visits may all be needed to further verify the presence, condition and characteristics of a specific area identified as a wet histosol on this map. Directive from the Minnesota Legislature: During the Minnesota Legislative Session of 2023, $1.566M from the General Fund was allocated for protecting and restoring carbon storage in state-administered peatlands by reviewing and updating the state's peatland inventory, piloting a restoration project, and piloting trust fund buyouts. The Potentially Wet Histosols of Minnesota dataset was created to fulfill the Legislature’s directive to review and update Minnesota’s peatland inventory. |
